Archaeopteryx lithographica (Bird Fossil Reproduction) - Late Jurassic Period : Museum Company™. Archaeopteryx is well known as "the first bird." Having both dinosaurian and avian features, Archaeopteryx seems to represent a "missing link" between dinosaurs and birds. It is so similar in structure to theropod dinosaurs that some specimens had been mistaken for the small dinosaur Compsognathus. Unlike modern birds, Archaeopteryx had teeth, a bony tail, and claws on its forelimbs, but like birds, it had flight feathers and hollow bones.Since its discovery in 1861, Archaeopteryx has been shrouded in controversy. Many questions still remain unanswered. Was Archaeopteryx really an intermediate form between birds and dinosaurs? Why did its wings evolve? Could it take off from the ground or did it have to launch itself from tree branches? Was it a flyer, a glider, or could it fly at all? A handful of scientists even believed that Archaeopteryx was a cleverly crafted hoax created to add support to Darwin';s On Origin of Species, published in 1859. All the controversy of Archaeopteryx is part of what makes it so fascinating. Visit Archaeopteryx lithographica (Bird Fossil Reproduction) - Late Jurassic Period

Australopithecus Afarensis Skull (Hominid Skull Reproduction) : Museum Company™. Australopithecines afarensis is the oldest of four species of australopithecines, an extinct genus of the hominid family found in E and S Africa between 4 and 1 million years ago dating, which is know to be at least 3.75 million years ago. Evidence from 3.6 million-year-old footprints, preserved in volcanic ash at Laetoli, and from postcranial skeletal remains show that Australopithecines afarensis was relatively small, standing 3.5 to 5 ft (1 to 1.6 m) tall and weighing 45 to 110 lb (20 to 50 kg). All four species shared a number of anatomical similarities, including a fully erect posture and bipedal gait. The most "primitive" feature was a small and apelike braincase, comparable in size to those of both gorillas and chimpanzees when measured relative to overall body size. Mosasaur Tooth Fossil Box, Cretaceous Period - Actual Authentic Fossil : Museum Company™. From our Museum Field Kit(tm) Line, this acutal Fossil (Fossilized) Mosasaur Tooth belonged to a true "Sea Monster" that co-existed with the dinosaurs. This tooth is from an extinct Marine Lizard. It was a dominant marine predator during the Cretaceous Period 65 to 144 million years ago. They are considered to be the closest relatives of snakes. Mosasaurs ranged in size up to 55 feet long. Their fossil bones have been found with shark teeth embedded in them - what a battle that must have been! Fossilized Mosasaur bones and teeth have been discovered in states covered by the Cretaceous Seaway in Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana. The huge inland Cretaceous Seaway split the North American continent into two halves 100 million years ago. Visit Mosasaur Tooth Fossil Box, Cretaceous Period - Actual Authentic Fossil

Orthoceras Fossil Box - Atlas Mountains, Morocco - Actual Authentic Fossil : Museum Company™. From our Museum Field Kit(tm) collection. Orthoceras appeared 500 Million years ago becoming extinct during the Devonian period 385 Million years ago. The name means straight horn, referring to the characteristic long, straight, conical shell. The preserved shell is all that remains of this ancestor of our modern-day squid. Found Fossilizing in marine rock, especially limestone, this one was discovered in the Atlas Mountain Range in southern Morocco. They have been discovered up to 14 feet long. Ammonite Fossil Matched Halves Box - Jurassic - Cretaceous - Actual Authentic Fossil : Museum Company™. From our Museum Field Kit(tm) collection this is an Ammonite which has been split in half and polished on one side. Ammonites first appeared in the seas 415 million years ago. During their evolution three catastrophic events occurred. The first during the Permian (250million years ago), only 10% survived. They went on to flourish throughout the Triassic period, but at the end of this period (206 million years ago) all but one species died. Then they began to thrive from the Jurassic period until the end of the Cretaceous period when all species of ammonites became extinct. During medieval times ammonites were believed to be petrified snakes.  Visit Ammonite Fossil Matched Halves Box - Jurassic - Cretaceous - Actual Authentic Fossil

White Ammonite Box, 180 Million Years Old, Madagascar - Actual Authentic Fossil : Museum Company™. From our Museum Field Kit(tm) collection, this is a Genuine Natural White Ammonite Fossil approximately 180 Million Years old, that was discovered in Sakaraha Madagascar. Ammonites first appeared in the seas 415 million years ago. This species thrived from the Jurassic period until the end of the Cretaceous period when the last species of ammonites became extinct. This early direct relative of the modern nautilus can grow up to six feet long. During medieval times ammonites were believed to be petrified snakes. Turritella (Elimia Tenera) Fossil - 34 to 56 MYA - Actual Authentic Fossil : Museum Company™. From our Museum Field Kit(tm) collection, this Turitella Fossil, which has been reclassified by paleontologists as Elimia Tenera, is an extinct species of fresh water snails (gastropods). The confusion with theif identifcation is that they share a very similar shape to ocean born salt water Turritella. The Stone encasing the Elimia Fossils is Agate. The formation is from layers of sediment deposited in ancient lakes in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Montant. This is now part of the Rocky Mountains, the only place in the world they have been discovered. This species flourished 34 to 56 million years ago. By studying a rock hard pile of poop, scientists learn about the metabolism, physiology, behavior and environment of the dinosaur that produced it One question about coprolite may never be answered, which Dinosaur did it come from? Coprolites range in size from 1/4 to over 24 inches and can be 65 - 500 million years old. They have been discovered in states covered by the Cretaceous Seaway: Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Montana.
